Virus scanning applications and Microsoft's Windows Defender can be great tools to help prevent unwanted virus and malware onto your computer. However, they can be an unnecessary drag on your LTO tape deck performance.

If you have a third party virus application on your PC disable it while using LTO interfacing applications.

Unfortunately it's not possible to totally disable Windows Defender on Windows 10 operating systems, so the next best thing is to simply add your LTO tape drive to the scan exclusions list.

To do that, type in 'defender' in the start menu and select 'Virus & threat protection'. Then select 'Manage settings'.

Scroll down and choose 'Exclusions'.

Click 'Add or remove exclusions', then click 'Add and exclusion' and choose 'Folder'. Browse to your LTO drive--it should have been previously mapped (using the LTO configuration utility for you deck) with a high drive letter (so it doesn't change often) such as Z:\.

That's it. Should your LTO drive letter mapping change return to Defender Exclusions and adjust accordingly.
